Brave Books
How do you teach your kids to be brave and discerning? In a previous post, I wrote about why I love Brave Books for kids. Their mission is to help you leave a lasting legacy by instilling pro-God and timeless values in your kids and grandkids. Their stories teach kids how to be strong and discerning when confronted by questionable culture. Of the ten books in Saga One, Little Lives Matter (book two) is my favorite.
Book Two about the Value of Life
Little Lives Matter brings tears to my eyes every time I read it. My boys are five and seven now, but Brave Books still capture their attention. The first page of this precious story about the sanctity of life immediately draws you in, transporting you to a forest on Freedom Island.
“Just as the wildflowers were starting to bloom in Wiggamore Woods, the sweetest little bear cub was born. He wasn’t like any other cub on Freedom Island, but that made Mother Bear love him even more.”
Little Mobi was born with only one front paw. Mother Bear cared for her frail cub day and night. One evening, a vulture named Culture landed nearby, as Mother Bear sat rocking Mobi outside their home. “What a tired mother you are,” he squawked. He goes on to observe how hard she’s working and that she can’t meet up with friends anymore. “Why don’t you leave him and live for yourself?”
Culture the vulture appears in several of the Brave Books. I love that my boys now identify vultures with culture. We’ve seen vultures outside before and they’ll say, “There’s Culture the vulture!” He’s a sneaky character, very much like the serpent in the garden of Eden who tricked Eve into taking a bite of the forbidden fruit.
Little Lives Matter
“Zip it, Culture!” growled Mother Bear. “You say if I leave, then my life will be free, but it’s my son’s life, not mine, that means most to me.” Mother Bear perseveres. It was tough, but she and Mobi got tougher. The little bear grew and faced more challenges through childhood. One day, the vulture returned and said, “Wouldn’t life be easier for everyone if you just ran away?” But Mother Bear crashes onto the scene and shoos Culture away.
At last, little Mobi grew up. Because of his struggles, he had a big heart for others. I won’t give away the rest of the story, but it travels full circle back to sweet Mother Bear in her old age. Follow Mobi as he learns the value of life at all stages. There’s also games and discussion questions at the end of the book. Elizabeth Johnston, a popular conservative influencer and Mama Bear of ten, helped Brave Books write Little Lives Matter.
Brave+ Streaming Platform
Brave Books now offers a streaming platform “where every world, character, and story shapes the imagination for good.” Unlike some popular children’s shows these days, the programs on Brave+ are low-stimulation and vetted, making it a safe platform for kids to surf on their own.
It includes their own show Iggy and Mr. Kirk hosted by Kirk Cameron. It’s reminiscent of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood (also low-stimulation), but set in a fun treehouse. During part of the show, Kirk will read one of the Brave Books. The pictures become somewhat animated, bringing the stories to life. He reads Little Lives Matter in the first episode of season one, “Injured Bird.”
I wondered if the show would hold my boys’ attention but it does. They’ve seen their share of high-stimulation shows over the years like Baby Einstein, Cocomelon, Blippi, and Vlad and Niki. But Iggy and Mr. Kirk is a win! It’s a well-produced show.
More examples of low-stimulation television are nature documentaries and Sesame Street.
